In the 16th and 17th century, when mining industry still was main source of income of the people living in the German Erzgebirge, the lack of light in the cold season and the danger in the mines were important topics. During that hard time people created the light figures, which should point the way to the miners coming home after work. And they should bring good luck to them. The angels represented protective power, while the wooden miners were the images of the men, who risked their life in the mines day after day. These two light figures found a firm place as pair even on the altar in the church.
This angel and miner figures are hand-made of nearly 90 individual pieces from different types of wood.
